In the very same week in which Brazilian singer Joelma from Calypso made strong remarks against marriage equality and compared homosexuals to drug users on their path to recovery, singer Daniela Mercury decided to take a stand against Joelma’s homophobic speech and publicly come out on Instagram today, posting a picture with her wife Malu Verçosa (gay marriage is legal in Bahia as it is in São Paulo).

If there is a moment in Brazilian history for more celebrities to publicly come out of the closet and show their support, that moment is definitely now, especially with the unexplicable appointment of racist and homophobic evangelical pastor Marco Feliciano as president of Brazil’s Human Rights and Minorities Commission. I wish we had more singers and actors as brave as Daniela in this pivotal moment who would also come out in support of a greater cause.
