The last time I had sat through an entire broadcast of MTV’s VMAs was probably over ten years ago, when I went to the actual show and saw Justin Timberlake perform solo for the first time. Since then, MTV has tried out several different formats, venues, and hosts, but year after the year the show felt more irrelevant. Last night, however, MTV finally got it right and brought back the energy (and the relevance) of the VMAs, partially thanks to a brilliant performance by Justin Timberlake and his ‘NSYNC buddies, and a state of the art new venue: Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. It didn’t feel like an awards show; it felt like a massive concert attended by some of today’s biggest names in music with a much more grown up and sophisticated production value than in past years (when Selena Gomez shows up in Atelier Versace you know things are changing for the better). Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ performance with a surprise appearance by Jennifer Hudson was also one of the highlights for me.
